Occupational therapy covers a wide range of fine motor, visual motor, daily life skills, and sensory needs in the school system. The quickest way to reach our students is through hands-on learning. The Osmo Little Genius Starter Kit is great for hands-on learning with my littlest students. Mixing technology with letter formation is a great way to grab the student's attention. Once the student has mastered building the letters with the sticks, they will move on to forming them with paper and pencil. The books will be used as a starting point for writing topics and art projects. Supplies such as crayons, stickers, and hole punches enhance our OT sessions. Art projects grab the students' attention but also require fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, visual perception, and best of all... the kiddos think its FUN! Games such as scattergories require handwriting practice, and giant spoons incorporates visual motor skills in a fun activity! My students are already enjoying uppercase and lowercase magnatab boards, so I know they would be overjoyed to have access to the number board as well as the free play to practice short words on. My students range from junior kindergarten-fifth grade, so their interests range too! These students have great potential, if only they have supplies that interest them.
