I teach eighth grade reading and many of my students are reluctant readers. I have discovered that many of my students do not enjoy reading and that larger book are intimidating to them. I recently borrowed "skinny" quick read novels from the reading intervention room, and my students are devouring them. I must return these books, and my students don't want me too! They want to borrow them to read at home and during academic study, but they are not my books to lend out, which is disappointing to my students. My classroom library is lacking in equitable books; the books do not adequately represent the students reading them nor their reading levels. I have added several Black and Latina novels to off stories that my students can connect and relate to.
