I work with a student population who lack basic functional/fundamental skills of alphabetizing when using a dictionary. These students struggle within the classroom when an assignment requires the use of a dictionary in the area of how to use the guide words at the top of each page to locate the word they are looking for. Many of of these students are also struggling readers which also make it difficult for them when using a dictionary. The students are currently in 6th grade, and it is a vital, essential skill that will be used throughout the school year. With developing this skill, the students will be able to work diligently on the assignment without the struggle of using much of the time trying to figure out how to use the dictionary. At this point of time, they are utilizing far too much time trying to figure out how to find the words.
