I would like to implement flexible seating in my resource classroom. The students that I teach come to me because they need an individualized approach to learning; an alternative way to learn outside of the general education classroom. Research indicates that students who are given flexible seating options, such as stability balls and wobble chairs have increased on-task behavior. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. Many of my students have difficulty staying on task to complete academic assignments throughout the day. Thus, they come to my classroom to receive intense intervention in the areas of: Reading, Math, Behavior and Language. I expect that my student’s ability to stay on-task while in my room will increase with specialized seating. I also foresee that my students with disabilities, such as Autism, Attention Deficit Disorders, and Learning disabilities will show an increase in work completion, standardized test scores and a decrease in problematic behaviors. The population of students I teach typically have difficulty in the general education classroom. If I have enough seating I can collaborate with the general education teachers to implement seating in the general education classroom for select students. This project is an effort to assist my students with reaching their maximum potential and would enhance student’s ability to reach their individual goals within the resource and general education classroom.
