My program was once larger and better funded, but after manufacturing opportunities left the community, many families lost their jobs. That was a decade ago, and the situation hasn't changed for the better. For about 50% of my students, purchasing an instrument is out of the question - regardless of their passion for music. I have been to area pawn shops, had instrument drives in the community, and visited yard sales and estate sales across the state. I have personally bought, and repaired, 6 instruments for students. We have had 2 donated to the band. This project aims to alleviate that a little. Our band wants to grow - there are students who are interested in joining right now - but I don't have an instrument to give them. This instrument will be checked out to the student and they will be able to practice at home.
