In low income areas of color it is often the norm to be overlooked. Our students come from some of the hardest hit areas of Oakland with the highest rates of poverty. Although many of our students usually lack access to the arts, we are making sure that our programming helps to create successful outcomes including increased socio-emotional learning, justice and self expression. To help achieve these outcomes, we are creating a new production called The Black Nutcracker which is completely student lead and created, and focuses on the African and Afro-Latinx diaspora through music, dance, and theater. Students in the dance program will be creating the dance compositions for this new narrative. All of our students across all of our programs will compose music, create choreography, direct scenes, and create video imagery for the set design and video projections. Furthermore, the ipads we are requesting will not only be useful in creating audio and video of our work but will also be helpful for graphic design purposes to create marketing and promotional materials for the show.
