The students in my classroom have been identified as struggling with the basic skills that are required to become successful readers and mathematicians. The students have tried hard in kindergarten but are still entering first grade not ready to complete first grade level curriculum. The students are not special education students, they are just students that need extra time and more hands-on and active learning than most classrooms are able to provide. My classroom is an innovative approach to the RTI mandates that have been placed on schools. Our school is in an area with changing population. Our free and reduced lunch needs are climbing at record pace in the district. As the families struggle at home to have basic needs met, the students struggle at school with parents working more hours or living through the stress of unemployment.
