These materials will help graphic design students bring their ideas to life on their own t-shirts. At Oakland High School, we serve a community of low-income families battling against the constant push of gentrifying forces in the Bay Area. Our students are bright, creative and motivated. Within our school, students can join our Visual Art Academy, “VAAMP”. VAAMP has been helping to elevate students into careers in the arts for years. I love nothing more than hearing about students who have gone on to follow their passions in Graphic Arts. We have amazing opportunities for students to engage in real-world scenarios and develop job-specific skills. One opportunity that students have really latched onto is the process of silkscreen printing. We recently had a t-shirt design contest where students designed a shirt for the VAAMP art academy. The students thought it was amazing to take their design from paper to a t-shirt. The only problem was we had one single screen. This was limiting because it meant we could only make 1 design. In the past few years, I’ve had a growing number of students express interest in becoming designers and tell me that they want to start their own clothing brands. Many students have approached me on their own time, asking if they can use our facilities to print their own t-shirts. Broadening our inventory of supplies would be an amazing opportunity for students. Not only would it provide a creative outlet for students to bring their ideas to life, but it would allow them to practice their entrepreneurial skills.
