I started a sensory regulation area in my classroom, but I didn't get too far after the money ran out. However, the kids have really been using it. Some of my most disruptive kids go over to that corner to take a break and, gasp, are quiet for 10 minutes while they use the mindfulness activities or have a healthy snack. There are some privacy and fidget tools that would truly help students focus and learn, things like a Buddha Board, jigsaw puzzle, coloring book, and fidget toy set. Working in special education, I get many students who struggle to regulate their senses - these kids may have autism, ADHD, anxiety/depression, or other conditions - not to mention much more school frustration than a typical student. Having games, activities and healthy food to help them focus and regulate their emotions, as well as de-escalate is a huge service to them.
