Providing students with concrete objects helps them learn the abstract concepts of addition and subtraction. The cuisenaire rods will help students visually see the part-part-whole relationship between numbers. These materials will also be helpful in teaching students place value concepts. Students will use these cuisenaire rods to demonstrate how to add and subtract numbers. They will transfer their concrete representations into abstract addition and subtraction equations on paper. The colorful storage baskets will allow for organized storage of the rods so that students can easily and independently access them. There will be enough rods and baskets for individual students and small groups.
