Sprague students who attend not only learn more about their rights - they also became inspired and decided to take action making a difference in our state in the areas they are most passionate about addressing. Following last year's retreat here are some examples of what our inspired students have done: - one student got involved and lobbied our Oregon State legislature to help get 5 mental health days for kids in the state of Oregon! Huge win for kids to see their concerns be taken seriously after the loss of three Sprague High School students to suicide in 2019 - one traveled Colorado to speak about gun violence and restrictions they felt necessary at a conference of adults. - four students were accepted into the Center of Civic Education Congressional Academy and attended it for two weeks this summer where they were able to meet with Senator Wyden and discuss their concerns in the State of Oregon being represented in D.C. - a group of students started a climate action group who was active during Oregon's senator "walk out" and planned the demonstration at the capitol - the purpose of the group is to not only make a difference but give kids purpose and get them empowered. I would love to take kids to Silver Creek Falls again to hold another "We the People" retreat to help them gain the tools to learn how to impact their local community and change public policy. Students will work on their research, communication, and persuasion skills throughout the weekend away. They will gain confidence, knowledge, and feel empowered in learning how to make the chance they want to see in the world. Throughout the course students will connect with community members and families to learn how to best initiate change.
