The novel I am requesting for my students, A Man Called Ove, will become part of our English unit titled "Society and Self." In the course of this unit we will read and discuss various texts related to civic engagement and being part of a community. We will analyze the conflicts created by being both an individual and a social creature. A Man Called Ove, a humorous, thought-provoking contemporary bestseller, will offer my 11th graders the opportunity to examine these ideas through writing and discussion. Students will surely connect to Ove, the grumpy protagonist, who is at odds with the changing community around him. He is an older gentleman with rigid principles and tremendous intolerance. He is appalled by the modern world and its legions of (in his view) idiots who can't do or fix anything. Yet he holds deep emotions and personal values that shape his life. Ove's "flaws" stem from great pain and firm beliefs, and he verbally grenades his neighbors, new friends, and unwanted cat with these beliefs. This book is at once hilarious and touching. Having a physical copy for each of my 11th graders will insure that they have access without expense and the opportunity to examine ideas important to teens--how do I fit in with those around me? How can I connect with others and still maintain my own identity?
