Imagine a classroom of 8th grade students immersed in a whole-class novel study--one that captures their imagination and taps into the perils of living in a controlling, dystopian society. Imagine students learning about characters starved for knowledge and needing to change a world that has kept them intentionally ignorant of some of the world's most beautiful aspects. Imagine inspiring a student to create their own change in the world through the gift of literature. As our students begin novel studies on either THE GIVER by Lois Lowry or FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury, we would like to provide the opportunity to give students their own personal copy of the novel so they can annotate and highlight as if it were a college text. These novels are not only revered modern classics, but they also do an excellent job of addressing our thematic question: HOW DOES ONE PERSON HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THE WORLD? Please consider helping us to improve our students' active reading skills! In addition, you'll be helping in our own pedagogical practice as we teach students a way to engage in a text typically unavailable to them with a limited class set of novels belonging to the school library. Thank you for your consideration!
