The requested items will help students across multiple age groups learn to refrain from inappropriate responses such as emotional and physical outbursts and practice how to respond positively to negative situations. The lessons taught utilizing the items will also help students reflect upon new skills and create templates of appropriate responses. The family figures will be used to role play and connect emotions to experiences; and help students develop empathy towards others. The protected iPad will serve multiple functions. It will be used as a resource for e-books, videos, and websites that help students learn what empathy is and how to develop empathy for others. It will be used to access resources that define and model appropriate social interactions; and to administer individual student cognitive and academic assessments (many of which are only accessible on the Apple platform). Students will utilize the written expression tools (doodling mat, easel, iPad) to illustrate how to handle conflict and frustration. Students will draw and write appropriate self-expression strategies and solutions to challenging situations. The combination of materials will help create an environment that promotes trust and enables students to be vulnerable, reflective, and problem-solvers.
