Each day 10 students with varying disabilities enter my classroom. It's impossible to know exactly how their 18 hours at home went, how their bus ride impacted them, how the brightness of the lights or the sound of the hallways impacts their morning. When they enter my classroom, they are in their safe place and seek the support they need to deal with these varying sensory processing difficulties. If we cannot combat the sensory input, and find calm, we certainly cannot teach. Providing environmental modifications that have PROVEN EFFECTIVE for the individual students in THIS classroom is the FIRST step to create an environment where these students can put all their needs aside and learn. Over the last two years, I have used Kore chairs in my classroom and seen the POSITIVE difference in EVERY SINGLE KID when it is "their day" for the chair. Being able to provide more of these seats for my students is the FIRST step to preparing them to process, learn, grow and find success. If something as simple as a chair can give them the support they need to self-regulate and get through the intense demands of school, I believe it is my job to find a way to provide that!
