In this class they earn class money by participating, staying on task, following expectations and working hard. Every other week they get to purchase items from our classroom store. The most popular items is the diamond painting. Students use their fine motor skills to stick the small plastic diamond onto a sticky surface. After completed they have their own "diamond painting" sticker. They stick these stickers on water bottles, pencil boxes, backpacks, notebooks, etc. They love the options that they come in. They have also said that it is a relaxing activity in which they are just following a pattern that will give them a great outcome. As a third-grade Spanish immersion class, it would be wonderful to have just had many Spanish books options as there are in English. I have carefully thought about and researched books that I see many students read in English. I want them to reach for the familiar books they reach for now and see that the language is not a barrier to them. That they are capable of enjoying the same story in either language. There are books that also deal with Hispanic culture. As Noam Chomsky said, "A language is not just words. It's a culture, a tradition, a unification of a community..." The books will help the students achieve greatness in Spanish by practicing their comprehension and literacy skills. The diamond painting will continue to motivate the students to work hard in order to have a nice reward.
