My students will use the book "Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America", to broaden their perspectives about people different from themselves, building empathy through powerful storytelling. I hope to use engaging stories of people from all different backgrounds to nurture their natural love of reading. We only have access to more traditional novels for whole-class instruction, and by providing diverse voices, I hope to show my students that reading is a lifelong passion that helps them in myriad ways. My students will already be familiar with the memoir genre because they are currently writing their own memoirs, so using this book will allow many students to be successful. My students are at various reading levels, so using something that is engaging is important to helping them through difficulties.
