My students have severe learning disabilities in reading and math that also reflect on other content areas. The population of students that I teach are of a disadvantage socioeconomic backgrounds. I am a first year teacher. At the age of 44, I graduated college and obtained my teaching license with a special education endorsement. Teaching has been my dream since I was five. My parents adopted my six cousins when I was four. One of my cousins/sister has a severe cognitive disability. I spent most of my youth helping her learn colors, numbers, letters, shapes, and some simple math. I was also her protector from bullies and advocate for fairness. Most all of my students are tactile and visual learners. In order to teach the curriculum that I teach, I need manipulatives for my students to see, hold, and use. Each “counting bear”will help my students by being able to place them on a five or ten frame square representing the number shown. When they add or remove a bear it shows adding and subtracting. Bouncing chairs/stools help my students that can't sit in a regular chair without continuous movement. The special chairs enable them to wobble like their body wants to, and their mind will be ready to learn. I want to make a difference in my students lives. I was told in 4th grade by my title teacher that I was a retard and I would never learn to read. I actually hated school because of her. I want to be the teacher that students learn from and remember, I have the right mindset, heart and attitude to teach them, I just need the tools to enhance their learning.
