My students' love for cooperative learning and group work has resulted in less enthusiasm for independent reading. I have many students that entered the year far below a third grade reading level, and many of them have expressed frustration about their reading skills. My goal is to encourage them and support their reading development by providing a space where they can have positive experiences while reading. My students will benefit from this project because they will have a quiet and comfortable space that promotes independent reading. I will use this space during our daily English Language Arts (ELA) rotations. My classroom is structured so that students spend part of the morning working in small groups on different reading and writing activities. They rotate every 15 to 20 minutes. Once I build the library space, I will incorporate it into our ELA rotations, and all students will have an opportunity to use it each day. Students will also be able to utilize this space if they need a quiet place to work or calm down after feeling overwhelmed.
