The materials I am asking for are either essential to their baseline skill learning or enhance what they are currently towards in their project based learning exercises. Many of my student cannot afford or have the support to buy personal calculators. Much of what I teach, physics and chemistry, require a higher level of math proficiency. Thus, on test and quizzes, those who do not have the necessary materials are drastically disadvantaged. So, what is project based learning? Project based learning is a pedagogy that I utilize in my science classes, so my students have choice and voice over what is learned. By allowing my students to take owner ship over content, the content inherently becomes for relatable to their lives. For example, a project based lesson emphasizing inquiry provides students with guidelines and expectations for a specific content. Students then use their knowledge of the scientific method to ask meaningful questions, find resources to help them answer questions, develop methods and experiments to test hypothesis, conduct their experiments, record data, and produce a formal presentation of what they learned, how they learned, and why it is important to them. A printer for my classroom will provide the efficiency and access to hard copies of online educational resources, and a free resource for them to provide visuals for presentations. Since it costs money for our students to print through the school directly, many of my students lose this valuable resource and are restricted from learning opportunities other are given. An organized filing system will help with the efficiency of providing feedback from specific projects to each student. Every student will have a file within the filing system to get their work back in a discrete way, so I do not have to waste valuable classroom time handing back materials.
