The gift of inclusive education is that every student is encouraged to learn in ways that are most supportive of their needs. This means that in order for all of my students to have the most equitable access to quality education in a general education setting, our environment needs to look a bit different than most traditional classrooms. Because my students have diverse strengths and needs, the traditional classroom setup is not the most conducive to learning. Gone are the days where classic rows of neatly organized desks were considered the best approach for student focus. In fact, being able to MOVE while learning is actually incredibly effective for students with sensory needs. The wobble cushions and stools will help my students rock and move as they learn. The fidget bands will offer my students a way to increase their focus and attention. These bands are small and discrete but offer immense help for students who need to wiggle while they work without distracting their friends. Inclusion works for every child! Recently, students have expressed great interest in using noise-canceling headphones in our classroom. It makes me incredibly proud to see them advocating for their needs! You see, many of my students present with sensory needs, which means that they can be particularly sensitive to sound. Our classroom has beautiful high ceilings that make our historic school special​ but create an echo that can be overwhelming for children with sound sensitivity. These headphones will help them block out background noise and hear their peers and teachers around them. I am so happy to include you in our classroom.
