The reading materials and tools I chose will be developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant and utilized to support my student’s academic and social-emotional growth. I have selected books to build a first-year classroom that will be relevant to the cultural backgrounds and developmental needs of my students. My library will be used to encourage students to explore the world of reading and provide them with classroom opportunities to make reading an integral part of their daily routine. In addition to building a library, I am hoping to provide my students with a document camera. This tool can be used to make literacy instruction more engaging, interactive, accessible and effective. The books and tools selected will help to create a learning space that fosters student interest in reading and will encourage students to browse books as a leisure and fun activity. With the materials selected students will have a variety of books and tools (i.e. document camera) to develop their pre-reading skills including the alphabet, print concept, phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency. I want students to have an inclusive library that reflects their community and cultural wealth and that will introduce them to the world of reading in a fun, relevant and engaging way.
