I recently started something called "First Chapter Friday". Once a week, on Friday, I read the first chapter of a novel to my classes. This gives me the chance to introduce students to high interest reading materials to encourage them to read novels for recreation, not just for class or an assignment. I often hear students say that they don't like to read. I believe every student has a reader inside of themselves, they just need the chance to find the right book. Many of the books they currently have access to are outdated, falling apart, and difficult for students to connect with.
