This is the founding year of the Newcomer Academy at my school. The classroom library has a few books in Spanish but not enough to engage our students during independent reading time. When students are fluent readers in their first language they quickly transition over their skills into the second language. Having books in the classroom that are accessible to them will greatly improve their reading skills in English in no time. A well stocked classroom library is the cornerstone of independent reading. There is nothing like having real books that can be read and understood in a child's hand. When children engage with a real book as they turn pages, they begin to view themselves as readers. For some of my students this will be their first experience holding a book in their hands. By funding this project you will help me enhance my classroom library and put books into the hand of my newcomer students.
