The purpose of this project is to provide some fun sing-alongs for my lower elementary students, and several informative texts and interesting reading material for my upper elementary students. At an inner-city school with a racially and culturally diverse population, it is urgently important for my students to be introduced to the contributions of musicians who look like them. Students need to know that many great musical artists come from communities much like their own. All too often, the focus in music class is on classical European composers like Beethoven and Mozart. Providing opportunities for students to study more modern composers and musicians, like Stevie Wonder and Celia Cruz, will allow them to connect familiar popular tunes with the artists' amazing stories of triumph. Most of these students will be battling against the obstacles of physical disabilities, poverty, and social injustice for many years to come. With your help, we can go a step beyond giving them hope for a better day. I want them to see and hear about true success stories. My students need to know that the American Dream does not have to be a dream deferred.
