Using these high-interest magazines, my students develop vocabulary, reading comprehension, science conceptual understanding, and map skills. My students debate the pros and cons of current issues. They develop ideas, models, and diagrams to solve problems. My students use the articles to write support their ideas using scientific evidence Coming from a school that is a majority free lunch, my students do not have experiences that take them out of their local geographical area. More affluent areas have the benefit of students' that contributes to their comprehension in content areas. In addition, many families have few resources to buy books. Scholastic News is of high interest and poses debate questions about local and global issues. It is inspirational for students to hear about young people making a difference.
