I have an area in the classroom for my sixth grade students to pick up and look at rocks, fossils, minerals, and anything else that we are studying at the time because it all starts with wonder. Giving students a geode of their own that they can open and see what surprise is inside is something that most of them will not experience without your help. That hands-on experience is important to young learners because it becomes much easier to connect with the information learned in class about the rock cycle and the formation of our planet. It is important that science students can also have fun while learning because it brings them back for more! So many major advancements and discoveries have happened due to adults who had positive experiences with inquiry as children. Opening a geode, learning about how it formed, sharing information with others, measuring it and writing about the experience will also offer them a chance to connect directly with the planet that we hope they protect as they become adults. The activity also provides an opportunity to reinforce skills in several other subjects as well. Students will be able to take their geode home and share information with their parents, friends and siblings. This brings my classroom information home to families who also benefit while watching their child learn.
