Math has really evolved over the years. No problem is a simple computation! First, a problem is a real world story or situation to interpret, analyze and translate. Next, it's a multistep problem to plan, organize, solve and check! Calculators in a 6th grade classroom are essential so we can focus on mastering skills and getting through problems, rather than spend so much time manually solving and checking our calculations. They add some excitement to classwork, as students really love to work with a calculator! Calculators aren't always available when we need them. It would be great to have a class set on hand without asking my students to purchase them, as they are costly. I found they cost between $12 and $18. The best deal I found was $12.22 each for brand new, pink TI 30x scientific calculators. It would be great to have 32 calculators. I teach 90 students, so we all can share.
