The high achieving high school youths I teach travel throughout the building daily from one desk to another. For these students, gone are the days of recess and free play. Instead, they spend long periods sitting while working diligently. Studies show that youth who are more active exhibit better focus, higher cognitive processing, and more successful memory retention. Movement increases blood and oxygen flow, in order to positively affect learning. Please help my students get the movement they need with wiggle stools, balance balls and whiteboard desks. The stools and balance balls will allow students an alternative option to sitting still. With these modern seats they can burn nervous energy, focus better and incorporate motion and balance into their days. In talking with my students, this is an idea that excites them. They know that sitting at a desk for eight hours a day is not ideal nor beneficial to brain development. The addition of lap desks will allow more flexibility and freedom for students who long to stand or to sit and not be confined at a table. My objective is to provide a variety of options for students to move about while learning in an environment that best suits personal needs. The whiteboard desks will allow students an expressive surface to brainstorm, collaborate and move about while sharing ideas with peers. These surfaces will provide increased engagement in class content while encouraging students to stretch and move about the room. These new surfaces will get teens moving and engaging with one another; as I know they will be in high demand. The movement of writing on these surfaces is not only appealing to students, but increases muscle memory by physically writing instead of working on computers. Please help us MOVE, SCRIBBLE and LEARN. Thank YOU!
