My students work on self-control, anger management and calming strategies throughout their day at school. One of the main techniques we use is yoga, mindfulness and meditation. My students have embraced yoga and are actively working to build a more positive and calm mindset, not only in the classroom, but in the world. We spend a lot of time learning how our heart rate is indicative of our mood and state of mind. I am trying to teach them that if they can catch their heart rate rising, they can utilize their calming strategies to de-escalate rather than acting out in a negative manner. The heart rate monitors will allow them to track their heart rate throughout the day and learn how to identify when they are starting to escalate. The use of these monitors will also assist the students in tracking their heart rates all day long, allowing them to see what times of days or activities may be inadvertently escalating their moods and behaviors.
