In our art room, we strive to make art accessible to everyone's abilities. We find that the creation of art opens up many of our special education students to enjoyment, creativity and possibly the way to approach other parts of the educational environment with a new focus. Within our Special Education classes, we work with building structures out of blocks, making objects out of clay, using designs and shapes to create masterpieces and overall have fun. Because we are always trying to provide the best experiences for our students, we look for new products and tools to help reach our goals. Recently, in looking for ways to focus on architecture through design and shape, we discovered Tileblox. These shapes link together to create new shapes and structures and are easy to use but can be made complex. They offer a wonderful option for students whose needs may differ greatly. Our students can learn and interact with concepts of structure, shape, and color with a product that offers ease of use in creating something more interesting. We found most of the students enjoy working with these magnetic blocks. They can create buildings and designs, but they don’t create any hazards because of the size and rounded edges. The blocks give a hands-on approach to design and architecture for the students. Being able to have access to these blocks and shapes will give the students a new creative outlook that can help mold their ideas of art and also work with their senses and passions. Our students are invested in building structures and these will allow them to make their work more complex and help with new motor functions and abilities.
