Seniors are often only occupied with graduating and getting away from the restrictions of school. Many have not actually set goals nor have a plan for life. I feel that good literature with guided reading can make an impact on how they think about their futures. The Alchemist is a book about a young boy, my students ages, who goes on a journey trying to answer some of the mysteries of life. He is persistent and although he meets much conflict along his way, he never gives up. Reading and writing about these themes will give students food for thought about their own futures.
