In order to enhance the literacy experience of our students and motivate students to read, I will be starting a Book Bowl reading discussion group after school for 5th grade students. Students will prepare for Book Bowl competition in March against other Book Bowl groups in Genesee County, Michigan. Over the course of several months, the Book Bowl members will read 10 chapter books chosen by the Book Bowl coordinators. Students will meet once per week in the after school book club to discuss each book in detail. They will then create and answer questions about the books they've read. To make it fun, we will play trivia games to practice answering questions to prepare for the competition. In order to be able to run this fun, motivating program for the students, we will need sets of 6 books of each title so students can have the books available for reading at home and discussion at our meetings. My goal in starting this program is to enrich students' love for reading, as well as to encourage deeper thinking about the books they've read. This will help them develop a lifelong desire to read throughout their schooling and beyond!
