Reading a novel is different than reading scientific information. Using this collection, students will be able to specifically practice their science literacy skills. This, in turn, will help improve their literacy skills in all areas. Students often don't have the opportunity to practice reading scientific writings. Books like "Stuff Matters" and "Elemental: How the Periodic Table Can Now Explain (Nearly) Everything" will allow them to read short, non-textbook scientific writings with interesting information about various chemistry topics. Weekly we will devote time to reading these works, while emphasizing literacy skills to enhance student understanding of the text. They will learn how specialized content sometimes requires different skills to enhance understanding, as well as find interesting facts about chemistry!
