Children today are involved in so many things. It often feels like there is little to no time for a child to simply be a child. Some parents try to do a lot for their children, but often forget to do things for them as students. They send them off to school and let the teachers take over. They see their children again after school, moving right into family time, without giving their students’ learning a thought at all. It’s no secret that involved parents and community connections increase student chances of developing to their full potential. I aim to seek ways to enhance their learning through creating positive experiences. I want to expose them to the world that awaits them outside of their classroom. Our annual Fall Festival will prove that we are all in this fight against illiteracy together. I hope to promote healthy family-school-community relationships so we can work together rather than against each other. Students who witness unity between their home and school life are more likely to be enthusiastic about coming to school each day. They may even improve their behavior and work ethic in order to participate in events they are excited about. This project will include an evening of fun and games that are tied into family and community involvement. There will be math (strategies, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing), science (speed, inertia, and gravity), and literacy based obstacles (matching, reading, following instructions, solving mysteries) connected to the activities. I hope to be able to reuse these items year after year to create a climate and culture of togetherness within a community which is often times very divided.
