Students need differentiation. Collaborative groups provide them with the social and emotional connections needed to enhance and enrich their daily learning experiences. Whether they are planning their work around blocks of time that include "brain breaks," or their group decides to work straight through and reward themselves at the end of a successful practice session, helping them have quality materials will stimulate their curiosity and create an active learning environment. Many of my students (40%) are English language learners. I truly believe in their talent: they are hard-working and believe in helping each other, so the process of acquiring skills in their Reading classes each day will be encouraged by my being able to provide support materials such as brain break games that include the social-emotion components we use daily.
