My students come from low socioeconomic conditions and have experienced the incarceration of parents, death of parents, and custody changes. They act out and deal with stress in a way that typical students do not. That is why they need actual books that they can connect with and be inspired by. Funding this project will supply them with paperback editions of the book Mr. Vertigo by Paul Auster. The book follows a young man who, with the help of a magician, learns to fly. Many of them need a message of encouragement such as this and need actual books to read from. Our school only supplies a standard ELA textbook.
