Scholastic Storyworks is a magazine for 5th graders that has both fiction and non-fiction articles. It allows students to have choice in their reading by offering multiple options in each magazine. Scholastic News is a weekly periodical that provides access to current events in a format that is interesting and exciting for students. It offers opportunities for classroom debates and to pair fiction texts, including novels, with current events. Also, it is aligned with the standards being taught for reading and comprehension strategies. Furthermore, it allows extended writing and research opportunities. Students love having choice in reading and Scholastic offers high interest articles that are a length where students can have success with completing a story or article in one sitting. This often is motivating to reluctant readers! Please help me provide this resource for my students to use for independent reading time, reading centers and small group intervention.
