Reading is my passion and I love to pass it on to my students! Using a sports theme and including reading is one way I hope to achieve my goal. My students love sports and this project will deepen their love of reading. March Madness using picture books rather than basketball teams will bring enthusiasm for reading as the tournament progresses! I plan to make a March Madness bracket in the hallway. There will be “sweet 16” picture books to begin. As the students read and vote on their favorite books, there will be “elite 8”, final 4 and, lastly, the championship round. Finally, we will have a winning picture book! After each round, books will be raffled off to the students to take home and enjoy! Not only will this project be fun for my students but since it is a voting year, it will enable them to have a deeper understanding of our voting process. Also, many of the books that I have chosen have lessons in them for my students. As the books are read, they will learn about compassion, determination, and freedom along with other traits. There are a few books that either tell about a person who has succeeded from our state or the author is from our state. This will help give my students a vision for their own lives!
