A classroom with a variety of seating allows students to choose seating that fits them best. It also facilitates movement around the room, allowing students to become active learners as they choose the seating and location that best suits them on any given day. The end result is a classroom where students are more focused on the task at hand, rather than on the uncomfortable nature of their seating. Standing desks, kneeling chairs, and yoga balls allow fidgety, taller and other students to focus on learning, instead of on the frustration and distraction of hard, school-issue chairs for 90 minutes at a time. These choices will be a welcome addition to the floor cushions, camping chairs and other "comfy" seating I have already provided. With better and more varied seating options, students will collaborate better. Fidgety and uncomfortable students can be a distraction to themselves and others since they find it difficult to focus on the work at hand. These alternative seating options will reduce this distraction. Furthermore, when students are allowed some input and choice in their learning scenario, they engage more deeply in the task at hand. The benefit is not limited to a select few, however. All students, will benefit; as they circulate, students will be able to change their type of seating frequently - avoiding the frustration and distraction of sitting on the same hard chairs from start to finish, and allowing students to make various choices !
