On behalf of the students at a High School in the City of Chula Vista in California, I wish to request funding for much needed classroom science equipment. The school’s population represents a broad spectrum of abilities and challenges; including those with special academic needs and those living in at-risk environments. Despite the students’ challenges our program targets and supports each individual student’s needs and strengths; with a high percentage of positive outcomes. In fact, many of the students go on to college or university after completing our program. These post-secondary schools include the California State University (e.g. Humbolt, San Diego) and the University of California (e.g. San Diego, Santa Barbara). Access to appropriate science equipment is vital to the students’ preparedness for post-secondary education. However, meeting this need is challenging due to the lack of appropriate science equipment in the classroom. We currently perform our limited experiments on a classroom table; and we employ plastic tubs because there are no sinks or running water in our classroom. Any water used for our experiments has to be obtained from another classroom. What little materials we do have are stored in cardboard boxes. In addition to preparedness for post-secondary education, a solid background in science is integral to understanding the world around us. To achieve this goal, exposure to science needs to be a real experience that fully involves and engages the student’s attention. It cannot be overstated how empowering it can be to a student to don the protective apron and safety goggles; and to observe the magic of cause and effect. Therefore, I respectfully request your support to help bring effective science instruction into the classroom. Thank you!
