Almost all of my students love 2D animated films and TV shows, and some have dreams of working in the animation industry. Creating collaborative 2D stop motion animated short films is one project that is truly engaging for all of my students--regardless of drawing skill level, background, or learning challenges. Using the light tables, we will be able to repeatedly trace our drawings, making slight adjustments each time, to create the illusion of motion. This technique references traditional 2D animation practices used in early Disney films. It gives students a very real idea of the time and artistic energy that went into some of their favorite movies, and provides them with an opportunity to think critically about the relationship between line, motion, and visual storytelling. Groups of students will work together to create their own animated shorts using their drawings. At the conclusion of our project, we will have a film festival as part of a school-wide art celebration, where students can show family and friends their finished works.
