I use literacy-based language instruction to help my speech and language students reach their goals. 50% of picture books feature white children as the main characters and 27% feature animals. The remaining 23% include books about children of color. Children need stories that reflect themselves, their communities, and their cultures to make learning exciting and accessible. I will use these books to engage students in conversations about their relatable experiences and their families within our shared school community. I want my students to see themselves represented in early, meaningful literacy.
