My elementary school students with learning disabilities have trouble making the same progress in reading and math as their regular education peers. They need more practice with books and more exposure to the skills of reading. Yet these student's often miss out on this practice because of the challenge of matching them with engaging texts on their reading levels. Even at their young age, these students often read 1 to 2 grade levels behind their peers. To make the same progress as their peers, these students require more effort and more practice; however, they face an additional challenge - there are just not enough books on their "just right" reading level to provide the practice that will accelerate their growth. It's like asking someone who can barely lift 10 lbs to bench press 100 lbs! You are setting them up to fail and feel helpless academically for years to come.
