With lack of funding in the Social Studies department at our school, I hope to obtain this book for my English Learners (ELs) who have no prior knowledge of Hawaiian history. With an engaging storyline and characters mixed with facts about the Hawaiian monarchy and its past, the story will allow students to interact with the text through a cross-curricular lens to connect Common Core State Standards with Hawaiian Studies standards. I usually stay away from teaching Hawaiian Studies as I do not have curriculum that is tailored to an EL population. With this text, not only will they be getting practice with literacy, but they will have fun doing it as they discover how Kino comes to visit the past kings of Hawaii.
