Becoming a life long reader is one of the ultimate goals all educators have for their students. It means they will never stop learning. Through diversity of literature students will engage in literary circles where they will discuss with one another the characteristics of what makes a hero or even, what makes a good read. In order to prepare for these discussion, students will need to complete some reflective writing activities. This type of writing creates a level of authenticity for themselves. Ultimately, I am interested in having my students recognize that all generations before them have gone through struggles and it is not unique to them, simply a part of the human condition. What is most important, how do you deal with struggles? To that end, I would like my students to interview people from previous generations and create a classroom project: The Heroes of Manchester, NH. This would encourage collaboration and the development of other soft skills. Most importantly, it will help with the acquisition emotional intelligence, empathy for example. These learning outcomes are essential as we progress forward.
