My enrichment room serves many children grades K-6, and they come looking every week at my bookshelves to see what I've found recently at garage sales or thrift stores. My room is a hoppin' place, especially during choice time when students from any homeroom can come browse books, work on projects, and play team or solo games. They make friends across grade levels, promote great books to each other, and take their jobs in the library - shelving, reorganizing, and book repair - very seriously. No matter how tattered, they treasure their books. A diverse class library will benefit all students, especially my students of color, who deserve to see books that celebrate positive and empowered depictions of kids that look like them. Every year, the number of books published that feature diverse main characters increases very slightly, but it's not rising fast enough. That makes finding such books in used shops next to impossible! Your gift of new books will make a difference and help us support goals in the areas of literacy, social and emotional development, and diversity equity and inclusion. Your gift will be read many times over by many different children. Please help my students see themselves: celebrated and empowered!
