My students live in a rural farming community in southeastern Oregon. They are not exposed to much diversity or various viewpoints, and I believe this novel by Nic Stone will show my students someone else's journey through life. In our contentious times, students need to learn how to cope with themes like racism, inequality, and history. Dear Martin's main character faces discrimination and deals with it by writing letters to the late to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students will not only analyze events of today but also compare such events to those of the past who fought for Civil Rights.
