It is my job and mission to educate all students within the general education classroom alongside their peers. It is also my goal for ALL students to find success within the classroom. To make that goal a reality, flexible seating options and fidget tools can go a very long way in meeting a variety of sensory needs our students have. Sit down! Sit up! Be quiet! Talk louder! Stop making noise! Don't touch that! Are you listening? Can you hear me? Pay attention! Do your work! It goes on and on the things that can be said to students on a daily basis. Yet, so many of these directives are unnecessary. Just by giving some students proper sensory inputs, having something to hold in their hands, a chair that wobbles or rocks or bounces, or a chair that helps their posture on the carpet, can give students the sensory input they need to pay attention and engage in class. Having putty to manipulate or a disc to sit on or headphones to block out noises can make all the difference.
