Our school is in the Gem State! What better place to form an after-school Rock, Mineral, and Fossil Club! Our elementary and middle school level, experiment-based Rock Club participants will have the chance to safely learn how crystals grow, how to identify, classify, and age fossils, rocks, and minerals through testing, learn what happens when different types of rocks are tumbled, discover how geodes and the crystals inside them form, "unearth" how to carefully dig for fossils, and learn how different types of rocks are formed. These supplies will create small "geologist kits" for students to take on "mini-expedition" field trips around our local area. Rock Club will help students refine their STEM, writing, social, and organizational skills through hypothesizing, experimenting, drawing conclusions, and writing about and sharing their findings. Students will be asked to solve real-world science problems using experiment-based applications. These experiments will empower students to use critical thinking and inquiry-based capabilities. Rock Club participants will improve their math skills through calculations, measurement, and gathering and organizing data. In addition, students will have the opportunity to improve their writing skills by creating "experiment journals." Rock Club will also allow students to enhance their social skills and collaboration by interacting with students on short field trips to gather materials for their research. Please, help us ROCK!
